Job losses hit home

Canada’s manufacturing sector is being devastated on the Conservative government’s watch, as yet another 2,000 manufacturing jobs are lost right here in the riding of Thornhill and the GTA.

Over 130,000 Canadian manufacturing jobs were lost last year. Another 39,000 jobs were lost last month, most of them in Ontario.

In today’s uncertain economic climate, Canadians are looking to their government for leadership, not slick advertising campaigns designed to misrepresent and distort the facts.

While Canada’s finance minister is busy painting a rosy picture of Canada’s economy, 2,000 Canadians got the news that the factory they work in is closing. Meanwhile, Jim Flaherty has the gall to boast about the Canadian job market being “the best in a generation” while families across Ontario are left wondering how they are going to pick up the pieces, survive and start again.

It just goes to show how out of touch this government and the finance minister really are.

The very person who is in charge of the economic well-being of our nation uses the platform of his office to undermine Ontario to the world by announcing publicly that Ontario is the last place you go to make a new business investment in Canada.

This is the same finance minister who has increased federal government spending over 14 percent in just two years under the Conservative government.

The Conservative government has squandered large surpluses on the GST giveaway, and not focused nearly enough on initiatives on which our standard of living depends. It is precisely times like this that the federal government shouldn’t have wasted the surplus and contingency fund so that there are options available to weather any economic storms.

The Conservative government offers no vision to address the Canadian manufacturing crisis. They offer gimmicks and attacks, just as they do on critical issues like climate change and our crumbling municipal infrastructure.

Canadians want to know that their federal government has a credible plan to bring Canada through current economic challenges and will protect Canadians in times of difficulty. Canadians want the federal government to take immediate and innovative actions to ensure that Canada remains competitive in the global economy and immediately stem the tide of job losses faced by Ontario communities like Thornhill.
